How to Set Up Emergency Contacts on Android
(A Must-Have Safety Feature for Seniors)
Unexpected accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time.
But what if your parent is unable to unlock their phone or make a call?
Fortunately, Android phones include an Emergency Contact feature that allows first responders or bystanders to see important information directly from the lock screen.
It only takes a few minutes to set up — but it could make a huge difference in an emergency.
Note: Menu names may vary slightly depending on the phone brand (Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, etc.) and Android version.
What Is the Android Emergency Contact Feature?
The emergency contact feature allows critical information to be accessed even when the phone is locked.
In the United States, this information can help:
- 911 first responders
- Police officers
- Paramedics
- Hospital staff
- Nearby helpers
They can view emergency contact information directly from the lock screen without unlocking the device.
✔ Works even when the phone is locked
✔ Helps emergency responders contact family quickly
✔ Can provide important medical information
Step 1 – Add Emergency Contacts on Android
There are two common ways to add emergency contacts.
Method 1: Through the Settings Menu
1️⃣ Open the Settings app
2️⃣ Tap Safety & Emergency (or Safety & Emergency Info)
3️⃣ Select Emergency Contacts
4️⃣ Tap Add Contact
It’s usually best to add 1–3 trusted contacts, such as:
✔ Adult children
✔ Spouse or partner
✔ Close family members
These are the people emergency responders will try to reach first.
Method 2: Add Emergency Info Through the Contacts App
(May vary by device)
1️⃣ Open the Contacts app
2️⃣ Tap Your profile or My Profile
3️⃣ Select Medical Information or Emergency Information
4️⃣ Add your emergency contacts
Some phones allow you to include both contacts and medical details in the same section.
Step 2 – Make Sure Emergency Info Shows on the Lock Screen
After adding emergency contacts, always test it.
How to check:
1️⃣ Lock the phone
2️⃣ Wake the screen
3️⃣ Tap Emergency or Emergency Call
4️⃣ Look for Medical Info or Emergency Contacts
If the information doesn’t appear, the setup may not have been completed correctly.
Always verify this step.
Step 3 – Add Medical Information (Highly Recommended)
Emergency contacts alone are helpful, but medical information can be even more important in urgent situations.
You may be able to include details such as:
- Blood type
- Current medications
- Medical conditions
- Allergies
- Primary doctor’s contact information
✔ This information can help paramedics and hospital staff provide faster care.
Step 4 – Enable Emergency SOS (Power Button Feature)
Most modern Android phones include an Emergency SOS feature.
When activated, it allows the user to quickly call 911 by pressing the power button several times.
How to enable it
1️⃣ Go to Settings
2️⃣ Tap Safety & Emergency
3️⃣ Select Emergency SOS
4️⃣ Enable Press power button multiple times for emergency call
Typically, pressing the power button 3–5 times quickly will trigger the emergency call.
👉 If possible, show your parent how this feature works so they remember it.
Important Things to Know
✔ Menu names may vary slightly between devices
✔ Samsung Galaxy phones usually place this feature under Safety & Emergency
✔ Older Android devices may label it Emergency Information
Even if the menu name looks different, the function is usually the same.
